Working Abroad - Am I READY?

I was quite busy this past few days because of the trainings I attended. And rather than staying at home and spending my time in bed and in computer, I decided to go out and spend more time to learn new things. So, last Saturday, Jan. 17 I, together with my other Intel friends spent time listening to our speaker Ricardo Casco, a migration consultant. The seminar took about 6 hours already but it seems that the time passed by soooo fast. Thanks to our speaker who made the seminar lively and very informative. It's all about the realities in Working Abroad which open up our mind once we decided to leave Philippines and work or leave in other country. As for myself, it really gave me insight on what I supposed to do, think and prepare when I finally left Philippines. Yes, I still wanted to go and try the life outside my comfort zone. I have so many reasons why I'm willing to do this and I think based on the discussions during our seminar I am somehow ready for the changes. I hav a clear purpose why I wanted to work abroad. And because of that very same purpose I am willing to endure the differences I may encounter along my way.

For those who are also planning to take chances in working abroad you should also ask yourself if you are ready. And below are some of the questions you have to ask yourself to decide whether or not to go there.

* DO YOU HAVE A CLEAR PURPOSE?
  • Job, $$$$
  • Support your family
  • Build career
  • Build capital, skills and knowhow
  • Escape poverty
  • Escape problems
  • Adventure, Status symbol

* ARE YOU READY TO....

  • Work and live in a different environment
  • Climate, food, customs
  • Religion, language, culture, housing, clothing, pleasure, lifestyle
  • Work in multi-racial environment, foreign management style?

* CAN YOU BEAR....

  • Being away from your family, children and friends
  • Not having support system?
  • Being restricted to practice religion and culture?
  • Losing part of your freedom?
  • Leaving your comfort zone like food, past time activities, your lifestyle?

* DO YOU HAVE....

  • The support of your family and loveones?
  • The skill or knowledge to provide you a negotiating leverage?
  • The educational and work credentials?
  • Adequate knowledge about the workplace, the people, the laws, the language?
  • Medical and mental fitness to work?
  • Contacts and friends in prospective workplace?

* HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW....

  • The country you are prospecting. Its culture, laws and people
  • The company, the employer and the recruiter
  • The job description, the employment contract, the benefits
  • The feedback and experience of OFW's in the workplace

* HAVE YOU CHECKED IF....

  • The job vacancy exists
  • The country is in the map
  • The employer is legitimate
  • The project site exists
  • The recruiter is duly licensed and authorized
  • The country of work allows foreign workers
  • You qualify with hiring requiements
  • There is no restrictions or ban by the Philippine government?

AND MOSTLY ARE YOU FINACIALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY READY?

Good to hear that you want to live a better life. But the present is not favorable for working abroad. I've seen a lot of warnings from those working overseas, because they are also affected by the worsening recession.

Don't get too inspired. Look out. Going overseas may not be a good option today my friend.

Readiness is really that important. I also gave in to the idea of working abroad with pending applications already and I hope I am ready enough to be prepared in all aspects..
